The distances given are undoubtly estimates. One site I located, given as five miles in reports in the Official Records, was closer to seven miles. Maps of the period are extremely helpful because they will usually show streams and lakes. If a report states, "We marched 12 miles and camped", you can just about bet the camp was located close to a water source.
