I recently found a Civil War Medallion. I will describe it and would appreciate any comments or information as to it's value. It is diamond shaped, approx 3 1/2 inches in height and made of brass. In the center it has a large 2. There are two crossed rifles across the center of the piece with the rifle butts and barrels extending beyond the diamond shape. The date 1861 is on the top and 1863 is on the bottom. Along the edges are the words Hooker's Volunteers, New York. There is a loop on the top indicating it was worn around the neck. This piece is in excellent condition. After researching the piece I learned that Joseph Hooker was a well-known Northern General during the Civil War and that he used to entertain his men by bringing "Ladies of the night" to them. This is where the word hooker came from. Unfortunately, my honesty didn't pay off. I showed the medallion to the owner of the land (he is my dentist), and he asked if I would "mind" if he took it and gave it to his nephew. My heart sunk. I gave it to him.
