The cannon balls seem to be in remarkably good shape, and were found either near the bank of the River Chagres or on the higher land outside the Fort that was called the "killing field" by an eyewitness to the attack by Morgan's men. Generally speaking the smaller ones (1, 3, 6 pounders) seem much more corroded than the larger ones (such as a 24-pounder I hauled around on my back for three hours). I wonder if that one came from the later assault on the fort by Admiral Vernon in 1740 or so. I got some of these on earlier trips, so I've had a couple for several years now--they seem to be doing just fine, but I want to make sure they don't just start deteriorating. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Kevin
