Hi,

to remove the rust is your call. Horseshoes are rarely worth very much. Certain ones can obviously be connected with Civil War, Indian Battles, famous persons etc.

It's simple to remove the rust. Soaking in Muriatic Acid works but is dangerous (CAUTION!). And a milder and safer metod is electrolysis. I have an axe head cleaning as we speak. There are many web sites and descriptions out there on how to do this. Basically you add one tablespoon of Washing Soda per gallon of water and hook a 1 amp Motorcycle battery charger to the object soaking. Positive clamp goes on a stainless steel spoon hung into the solution. Negative clamp attaches to the rusty object. You must get good contact.

Apply the power and bubbles of Hydrogen and Oxygen form after a while. Ventilate well. When all the rust is gone brush & rinse..treat rustproof. No way to overdo it. Black iron means your done.
