I once visited an island in Lake Eire a few miles off Sandusky, Ohio called Johnson’s Island many years ago. It was difficult to get onto. You would either have to anchor offshore, swim and/or wade in or take a chance on the boat being knocked around from wave action and dock on a very small, crude, and dilapidated dock which was not protected by any breakwater. The first thing I saw after docking and tying up and walking a short distance was a monument erected by the Daughter’s of the American (Revolution?), Cincinnati, Ohio in remembrance of the American Confederate Soldiers that died and were buried there. Walking in further were many rows of upright limestone grave markers with soldier’s name and rank. Many of the markers had withered away due to time and weather and many of the names were illegible.

I found later that this island was once a confederate prison camp and that many had died because of a plague that spread from Sandusky that also killed much of the town’s population as well. Much of the town’s population had fled and those who stayed to take care of the sick were later considered very brave and were heroes. In retrospect, I still wonder if I would have metal detected there had metal detecting existed as it does today. I probably would. Took some movies while there.
