OK,

"it depends". If they were near a creek, river or cliff it simply got thrown over the embankment. Just like folks in rural WV, KY & Tenn. do today. If not they would pick the head of a draw and start filling it up, or a sinkhole. Of course trash fires were also common so it's possible it was mostly burnt up. Also, if the camp was there a long time...latrines or outhouses were dug and they were filled up with the trash. They never hauled it very far. Less than 200 feet would be common.
