Re: "SHEFFIELD PLATE" button - any possible ID?

After further cleaning, I have found that this button is inscribed with :

SHEFFIELD * WN * PLATED

Also, there is some sort of shiny metal in places on the coin. I can't tell if these shiny places are where a plating remains or where the mineral "overcrusting" has receded to reveal the metal originally plated onto this button. Also, my guess as to the metal used to plate the button is that it is silver, though there is a slight yellow caste to it. Does anyone know if buttons from England imported in the 1800s were ever silver or gold plated?
