I have dug only one Tompion in my time. A long narrow screw with a nut and washer went through both the metal portion and the cork. The Tompion was placed in the barrel and the screw tightened which widened the diameter of the cork thus holding it in place. The screw and nut should have been nearby the Tompions or rusted away. Occasionally you will see a picture of a mangled Tompion that was not removed when the rifle was fired because the soldier forgot to remove it befor firing.
