A good question and one that I cannot answer expertly with authority but here is another picture of a Tompion. But what I can say is that they are just generally referred to as a "Tompion" and sometimes "Tampion". Many were handmade from various materials. The one I dug was in a gunnery pit area filled with U. S. three ringer "drops" and some range fired Gardners.
