Rick, I've dug half a grenade from 1670 which was likely used by Henry Morgan's pirates during their attack on Fort San Lorenzo in Panama. A very recent article in National Geographic (about the pirate ship Whydah) has an excellent photo of these grenades, which had a small hole on the top for a wooden or cork fuse. So it sure seems possible that the soldiers in the War of 1812 used these weapons as well. I'd recommend that you be extremely cautious about trying to disarm it though. I've read several descriptions on the forum about folks killed or maimed as a result of messing with live artillery finds. Great find--hope you uncover other, and safer, treasures at that site.

Kevin
