Christy, you might want to take a look at =John='s reply below (Civil War Breast Plate), in which he mentions the two best books you can find to help identify what specific type of plate you found. You may have to get them through interlibrary loan since they're fairly expensive and not too commonly held by public libraries. It'll be worth the wait though, I'm sure. Also, there are many experts on the forum, and I'm sure somebody will be able to solve the mystery for you if you keep asking.
