Hi Virginia,

That is an exciting find, and I hope you have many more. Although Horstmann made buttons during the Civil War, I can't find that specific backmark in my copy of Tice's (Uniform Buttons of the U.S., 1776-1865). That might mean that your button is post-Civil War, but it definitely sounds like a military button. Welcome to a great hobby, and happy hunting!
