Stan's pretty close. Your description matches the photos in the Tice book (Uniform Buttons of the U.S. 1776-1865) on page 160, "Naval Buttons Used During the Late 1840s-1865 period." In fact, if your backmark reads "R & W Robinson EXTRA RICH" you have a rare and valuable find. In any case, that's a fun thing to dig up. Keep up the great huntin'
