Military Button I.D.??

Hello! I don't do much military relic hunting here in western Iowa but I found an interesting button in a beanfield yesterday. The button is smaller than a dime and still has the full shank on back. The eagle on front has a shield on its chest with a capital letter "D" on it. The eagle appears to be clutching arrows and maybe a branch. Due to the heavy green build up on the button I can't quite make out the printing on back. What does the letter "D" stand for? What time period is this button? Is it a good idea to soak the button in olive oil? I have pulled a few late 1800's coins out of this field. Thanks for any info you can provide. Bob.
