Iron relic restoration?

Purchased a 12lb CS side loader that is heavily coated with laquer (Or something). This bad boy shines like a bowling ball. Does anyone know how to remove this and get down to the original metal surface?

I was thinking of soaking it in a zink and lye solution.

Thanks Dave
