Locating Camp Trash Pits

Since I have gotten into bottle digging as a sideline to detecting, I am looking for info about how to recognize the potential locations of trash pits adjacent to revolutionary or civil war camp sites. Where were these generally located in relation to the camp? I am particularly interested in finding any pits that may be present on the colonial site my buddy and I are searching now. The site is in a very large plowed field near a spring stream. Unfortunately, the area immediately surrounding both sides of the stream is highly vegetated. It will also be very difficult to spot any depressions in the plowed field, so probing will be useless. Digging test holes like the archaeolgists is one approach, but may take forever considering the size of the area. Just not sure where to go with this. Any general info on this subject appreciated.
