Research. Local. If you're in an area that's still pasture land (West Viginia) and not built up or hit by detectorists relentlessly like the Atlanta area you have a better chance of finding a campsite. People are still finding them but they're scarce. Personal diaries of soldiers can help. Or unit diaries. Check out civil war mags for the diaries. Good luck. Stan
