1830's Battle site

I need to know what relics can I expect to find from 1830's camp. A friend and I are searching a 2-day-occupied battle site from the 1830s, but we are finding nothing. A few old buckles, some horseshoe nails (probably from subsequent farming), etc. Lots of fence staples, modern nails, 22 shells, etc. We have so far covered about 10 acres. We know we are hunting the right area. Since we are digging everything and finding little, we suspect that they did not have much metal in those days, hence we will not find much. Anyone out there that can shed some light on this problem? Did they use/discard much metal? Did they have tin cans then? What caliber bullets were in use then? What used to break often? Did the Army have belt buckles? Other buckles? What did they look like? Thanks.
