The Portugese explorer, Vasco da Gama first rounded the tip of Africa in 1498 looking for a sea route to India. The first place he stopped was in what is now called Maputo, Mozambique. He established a post and over the years it became a large Portugese settlement. All the trading vessels that traveled between Europe and India and the East Indies passed right through the Mozambique Channel. I did a casual research of shipwrecks in Mozambique and found over 50 treasure wrecks from 1559 to 1719. Some of them have very rich cargo. Mozambique gained their independence from Portugal in 1975 after a long war. Then, civil war broke out and lasted til 1995 when both sides made peace. Mozambique now has an elected democratic government. After one year of negotiations, Pete and Jack of G.R.S. (see web page at:http://www.grs-inc.com) are traveling to Maputo on Dec. 1st for talks with the Minister of Culture. For more info, call Jack at:(813)327-4413. Sincerely, Pete
