countrfeit gold spanish cob

April 03, 1998 at 05:31:47

I found a counterfeit spanish gold cob at a colonial site this week, and I was wondering if anyone out there could give me any information on it. It has a diameter a little smaller than a dime, and it is about twice as thick. On one side it has a cross and the other side has part of the shield of arms (the lions and the castles). It is made of lead or a copper alloy and it has about 85% of the gold gilt left on it. Has anyone ever seen one of these, and would it be worth anything? Also, any idea of a time period it could have been made. Thanks, Tom Painter
