The Pearl Ship of the Salton Sea
April 06, 1998 at 18:41:37
The story goes something like this: in the year 1615, one Juan Delturbe sailed north in the Sea of Cortes after concluding a successful season of pearl fishing and bartering with indians in Mexico. He was looking for a fabled water route called the Straits of Anian, which supposedly was an all-water route to the Gulf of Mexico. According to the story, he had sailed too far north when he realized that he was completely landlocked, then abandoned ship and most of his pearls. The story would indicate that he had sailed into an unusual flooding of the Salton Sea by either the Colorado River, the Sea of Cortes, or both.
Now, before anyone trudges off to southern California to stake their claims, I ask the following:
Was there such a flooding of the Salton Sea in the past 400 years?
Was there an individual named Juan Delturbe, and did he try to make his fortune in pearls, and did he have to abandon his ship?
Did any of the Spanish missions record anyone wandering in with tales of a land-locked shipwreck?
