The steamer Pulaski sank 06/14/1838 off of New River (reference point: Jacksonville NC) with a lose of 100 lives. The Pulaski had left Savannah on the 13th stopping in Charleston to pick up passengers. at about 11:00PM on the 14th the boiler blew up.
The Pulaski built by Messrs. Ross in Baltimore, MD, was a 680 ton side wheeler, 206 ft long by 25ft. it had 3 cabins with berths holding 116 passengers and 4 state rooms for family use.
Much of the waters off new river are restricted waters and also marked danger are due to marine corp use with lots of bombs in the water.
