Bark is short for barkentine. I believe it was a vessle used to carry cargo such as was used in trade. The unique thing about them was, They usually travelled the same route either north and or south. The boats were designed to carry as much weight as possible and didn't require the rigging of a full sailed ship, "short haulers" so to speak.
