The Pilar sank in 30 foot deep water. Her upper decks were above the water line. The consensus among knowledgeable treasure hunters is that the Pilar was salvaged before a second typhoon struck and completely destroyed the ship, scattering her remains over a wide area. Andy Matroci, another one of Mel's divers, formed his own company to salvage the Pilar along with Duncan Mathewson III back in 1995. They spent two years there and found little treasure. Andy's company finally ran out of money and the project was abandoned. I would be very reluctant to invest in another attempt to salvage this wreck. There are too many other, better wrecks to go after.
