Fiction Writer seeks info on Jim Bowie/San Saba Mines
February 09, 1998 at 21:50:04

Howdy All! I am a "struggling" Western Novel writer who is looking for a little help/inspiration. Can anyone give me some good dirt on the connection between Jim Bowie and the Lost San Saba Mines of Texas? I am looking for any and all good retellings of the San Saba legend(s) that I may use as back ground info for a possible Western story. What I am trying to formulate is a good tale that I could use to send a couple of fictional characters chasing after the ever-elusive San Saba Mines, which apparently Jim Bowie once tried to locate. I have some basic familiarity with the story of the Misssion and Presidio at San Saba, that the mission was destroyed by Indians and the presidio eventually abandoned as untenable against Indian hostility. But it is what may, or may not, have happened afterwards that interests me. Did Jim Bowie have knowledge of the mines? Did he or any contemporary of his leave any record of what Bowie thought he knew? I saw somewhere that in the mid 1860's a couple of mining companies and numerous individuals even sunk money into the search for San Saba silver. However, I have been unable to find any details of this later-day search, or details of Jim Bowie's hunt for the same. Any info at all on the Lost San Saba Mines and/or Jim Bowie's connection to the legend would be much appreciated! Thank you sincerely, Gloria
