Monterrey/Skeleton Canyon treasure
February 11, 1998 at 19:30:02In a nutshell, in 1881 a Mexican gang robs Monterrey, Mexico dry of anything that glitters. As they are making their way north, through Arizona, they are ambushed and killed by American outlaws in the Peloncillo Mountains, and the treasure disappears. The thing that has got me frustrated to no end (not to mention the needs of the U.S. Navy!) about this story is the fact that a story is all I have on it. I have sent out e-mail galore to anyone in anyplace from here to Mexico asking for anything official about the robbery taking place, but either they don't know, or they don't have time to answer. So lately I have entertained the dread possiblity that (ugh!) it could be nothing more than a simple western tale spun by the likes of Pecos Bill. The only thing that is definate about it is that the burial description matches an area 40 miles north of Skeleton Canyon and nowhere else, and could only have been written by an individual who was actually there. So is there anyone who can end, as well as empathize with, my frustration out there? Maybe he's got access to back issues of the Tombstone Epitaph...that might work!
