Rick, thanks for the posting. My impression is the people on this branch of this forum are mostly into treasure hunting and mightn't be the best source of panning information. There are several other forums devoted pretty much to prospecting and I expect you can find a lot of help there. However, as to your specific question, it all depends on the river. Some probably don't have a best place because sedimentation might be too deep..... you'd do best to go by a bookstore and take a look at some of the several books on prospecting, and even dredging.... most of those explain the way gold and other heavier stuff is deposed in streambeds and rivers.

Meanwhile if you go to the prospector forum here, you will find postings which can take you to other prospector forums, if you like. best wishes, Jack
