Maximillian....Guess that makes as much sense as anything. At least it has the gold travelling north, instead of south, involves a time of chaos when such a thing could occur and be forgotten, involves a time when the country was advanced enough to have roads and equipment to allow the movement.
The number of people required to move that much gold would have long memories and wagging tongues. People loyal to France and Max were in short supply at that time at the end of his long day in the sun, but that one still works better than anything I've thought of or heard.
Ironic, Doc Noss died for the gold on Victorio Peak whether he found it or not. Another blip on the old radar screen and vanishing to support the hollywood myth of gold driving men mad.
