I haven’t gotten around to following up on this, but Milton Rose, in his unpublished manuscript, claims to have found a record in the Army records, (Military Records on civilians with the Army) of A.M. Adams, freighter-contractor, residence in Los Pinos, New Mexico (Fort Union), 1864-65. According to Rose, Adams first started as such at Fort West, NM, 1864.

Also, according to Milton Rose, Army records indicate his partner was George Davidson, Mule Packer, age 21, 1865. Rose continues (and I don’t know whether he’s implying he got this from army records) Davidson was a Greek, non-citizen who entered the country Aug. 28, 1860, age 16, Vessel S.S. Zered, Providence Rhode Island. Also, according to the Rose manuscript, George Davidson then shows up in the 1870 Census for White Pine County, Nevada; age 26, residence in Treasure City, Nevada; Occupation Mule Packer; value of personal property: $600; Birthplace, Greece; not a citizen.

If such documents exist, they represent a strong body of evidence the massacre events happened after the 1864 date usually given by Adams, and the 1862 date given by Brewer. However, Sturgeon, who was supposed to have doctored Adams after his escape, was only in New Mexico from October, 1862, until January 1864. And yet, Adams and Davidson show in the reported Rose manuscript to have been in residence at Los Pinos, New Mexico, until sometime in 1865.

Rose also claims to have found an item in the 1884 Winslow Arizona newspaper from Mrs Arthur Newman Adams of Los Angeles, California, wishing to know of the whereabouts of her husband who was in the Reserve, NM area prospecting for a number of years.

Unfortunately, Reserve, New Mexico was not named Reserve in 1884. Rose evidently did not see this letter, and perhaps was misled by someone concerning the existence of it. I’m am unaware of the location of archived, stored, or otherwise preserved copies of the 1884 Winslow newspaper, but the use of the name, "Reserve" for a community
