Unfortunately, Reserve, New Mexico was not named Reserve in 1884. Rose evidently did not see this letter, and perhaps was misled by someone concerning the existence of it. I’m am unaware of the location of archived, stored, or otherwise preserved copies of the 1884 Winslow newspaper, but the use of the name, "Reserve" for a community which was known as Milligan Plaza for several years thereafter presents serious questions about other information provided by Rose.
Also unfortunately, Rose was deceased when I obtained a copy of his manuscript.
I’ve about milked all the free research out of the National Archives staff that they are willing to provide. I can either try to buy microfilm involving civilian employees of the US Army for that time period, hire a researcher in Washington D.C., or go to Washington myself to do the research. At the moment all these are unpalatable alternatives.
The reason the National Archives personnel are jaundiced about checking the civilian employee info out for me concerns numerous requests for info on other related matters, which finally led to refusal for continued research for me. However, they continue to check such things out for other individuals. If any of you choose to follow up on this I’d be obliged if you would tell me what you find out. I’ll think of something to do for you in return.
best wishes, Jack
