Might Los Pinos, NM have been mistakenly identified? Could it have been Pinos Altos, NM instead? In 1864, Pinos Altos was an established gold camp and only 20 miles or so up Bear Creek from the Cliff/Gila area, which is where Fort West was located. Incidentally, it's reported that some of Adams later "expeditions" originated from Pinos Altos.
