If it turns out Rose is incorrect about the National Archives records of Adams and Davidson as freighters out of Fort Union, my bias is that Adams and Brewer were both members of the California Column, each discharged August 14, 1866, along with Soloman Davidson, all to make their way back to the gold fields of California the best way they could. Just my opinion, at this particular moment.
Records of these three men, their enlistments, movements, etc, and separations can be located in "Record of California Men during the Great War of Rebellion 1861-1866", Richard Orton, 1905. One copy of this work exists in tatters in the New Mexico State Library, Santa Fe, and a few others are still around in research libraries elsewhere outside the state. I believe California might have the information digitized in their archives, though I'm uncertain.
Another helpful work is a published dissertation "The California Column In New Mexico", Darliss Miller, UNM Press, 1982.
best wishes, Jack
