The second reason the identities and dates are important is for the purpose of pinpointing the location of Adams' rescue, which would help nail the location of the canyon, since Adams escaped to the west. The place the supposed Army patrol found him would, at least, place the canyon east of the rescue site. Brewer, we know, escaped to the east, and travelled east toward the sunrise and moonrise until he was rescued by a friendly Indian village located one day of walking from the Rio Grande. So, Brewer had an eastern anchor to begin his return search. The fact he showed up near Springerville, AZ, and assuming he arrived there from the Rio Grande, indicates his eastern anchor was east southeast of Springerville. If this assumption is true, and if the Adams' rescue documents could be located, much more would be known about the general location of the search area.
best wishes, jack
