Hi Brian.

Selecting the site to look for is a challenge. First you'd be well advised to do some research on the various choices to make certain they actually happened, going to original sources if possible. There's a lot of bunk out there. After that, you just watch for things to catch your eye while you are researching, learn as much as you can about the object of interest, and get out on the ground and learn the territory. When you do that you will discover a lot has been written by people who have never been on the ground.

I think the research is the most time consuming part, and the most challenging if you need material which doesn't exist in your neighborhood. A lot of newspapers from the past are archived in your state archives, and a good university research library can be pretty helpful.
