The meaning of "LUE."
April 06, 1999 at 14:37:02

There has been some real foolishness posted in this forum by one or more persons who, for whatever reason, seem to take delight in spreading disinformation. I suppose that it makes them feel important, in some way. Some of this foolishness is about the meaning of the word "LUE."

Refer to the Oxford English Dictionary, a 9000 page dictionary which has just about every English word ever uttered. According to the OED, "lue" (also "lew") means tin and silver mining. In its transitive form, it means to sift with a sieve. So, if you tell someone that you are going to do some luing up on yonder mountain, that means you are going to do some tin and silver mining. If you tell someone that you are going to lue the tailings, that means you are going to sift the tailings with a sieve.

Now, do you think that Karl von Mueller had any interest in silver mining, or that it is just a coincidence he chose the word "lue" to describe his treasure map?

I hope this post helps honest seekers in their quest for the LUE treasure, and I hope this little reality check will dissuade the pranksters from their petty little games.

Respectfully,

JW
