Chauncey--You are referring to the article by Patrick Donnell about the LUE treasure map (Mercator's World, vol. 3, no. 4). The LUE map, however, is not posted on their Web site.

Mr. Donnell is the person who introduced us to the words "Lloro," "Urraca," "Enterrari." See his post on: MapHist(http://kartoserver.frw.ruu.nl/HATML/STAFF/krogt/maphist/ill/1998417.htm).

This is probably where Terry got his information.

What I gather from Mr. Donnell, KvM was a family friend and he has a copy of the map with the three words written on it. According to the correspondence he received, "lloro" is Spanish for "I cry" or "he/she cry." "Urraca" is a feminine name. "Enterrari" is probably some form of "to bury."

Putting all this together, you could say that "Lloro Urraca entarrari," could mean, "Urraca cries because it is buried."

A crude version of the map can be found at MapHist where it is referred to only as a "Spanish Treasure Map." --JW
