I think a lot of people use the term loosly. If you have a lead to start with, research is easier. You can look up in the newspapers, court records, books, people who were there or who new the person/place/event. Getting good leads is the key. Most treasure hunting books explain this. A good map dowser can get you pointed in the right direction to unpublished leads or you can spend years going through every newspaper from your town and try to find some. Someone may have already been there if you use published leads.
