Another good possibility for finding out more info about Jim Hughes, Zwing Hunt, "Doc" Neal and Red Curley might be in Lincoln. They are supposed to have been involved in the Lincoln County wars.
Also, from the research I have done, you will not find the cache buried in Skeleton canyon it was moved slightly to the north. This is the best version I've read. The treasure was buried temporarily in Skeleton canyon and Zwing Hunt, who had been wounded in the battle, was left to gaurd the loot. Other members of the band continued their raids on mining camps and stages in AZ and NM. Their last crime was the murder of a farmer and his son and the theft of their wagon and ox teams.
Hunt had recovered from his wound, and it was decided to load the treasure, which now amounted to over a million dollars, in the wagon and head for Silver City.
Two days from Skeleton canyon, a distance estimated between 40 and 50 miles, the unshod oxen became so crippled from travel over the sharp rocks they were unable to continue.
That night the loot was carried up a hill and dumped into an abandoned shaft. The shaft was filled with rocks and gravel from the tailings and the wagon was burned, the oxen turned loose.
If someone does find it, it will be by accident. That shaft is blended into the scenery by now. But even if you don't find that one there are probably other goodies to find in the bootheel. Some people that a friend of mine know's who deerhunt close to the Skeleton canyon area have allegedly found some gold coins in there every now and again. But of course everything you've just read is hearsay. Good hunting!
