quik question

Over christmas I visited my grandmother, I began asking her about her coin collection. She showed me an 1854 o seated half w/arrows that she found in a field that her family was farming when she was growing up. The half would grade to almost uncirculated except for an N and E scratched on either side of the seated liberty. She told me that there was a reason for this but she could not remember what it was. I told her I would try to find out. It was found in an area of Ga that saw a lot of civil war activity. Any ideas?
