We don't have the Mohave desert here in NM, but up by Hillsboro where there are many, many mine shafts there are rattlers we call Mohave's that blend right in with the ground up there(I know 'cause I almost stepped on one),they have red, grey, black and tan markings. I just wanted to make another point about rattlers that I learned when I used to hunt them. Most types of rattlers, except for perhaps the Blacktail, will not waste venom. In other words if they feel threatened and it is something too large for them to eat, they will generally only inject a small amount of venom, so most of the time one will survive a bite, even dogs. The best way to avoid being bitten if you walk up on one is to be absolutely still and don't let them sense fear from you. I walked up on a rattler in the desert at night once, the shadow of a bush cast by the moon made it so I could'nt see it. I stayed absolutely still for a moment, then made a big leap to one side and continued on my way. The most difficult time to see them on the ground while it is light out is at dusk, they blend right in. Safe hunting to you all.
