Here are some places of interest:

1. Shore of Sandbridge, south of Virginia Beach: a 1786 gold doubloon and other coins found some years ago. 2. Noth end of Cedar Island: English, Spanish, and Portuguese coins have been found on the beaches.

Check this reference: "Graveyard of the Atlantic" by David Stick. Compiles the history of 600 ships losts in the Eastern seaboard from 1526 to 1945.
