Jason.. the Spanish used drill holes for a multitude of purposes. They used them to designate distances, depths and simply to mark a spot from a certain starting point. Mostly however the used them as a null. In other words they might say you came the proper distance but you went the wrong direction. In other words there is nothing at this location.
