Brian, Bobadilla was the governor of the Dominican Republic in 1502, and a bitter enemy of Colunbus. When Columbus sailed into Santo Domingo to ride out what he called a bad storm, Bobadilla ordered him to leave or be arrested again. By this time, Columbus certainly knew of hurricanes, and he quickly looked for a safe harbor. He also warned the commanders of the Armada that was escorting Bobadilla back to Spain that a "big wind" was coming. They determined to sail anyway, and left the port heavily laden with cargo. The fleet had to sail thru the very deep Mona Passage on it's way west of the islands. They never made it, and all ships were lost. None of these vessels have been found. Bill
