Brother Jonathan

Gold Coin from 1865 wreck sells for $100,000!!!

The Brother Jonathan sank off the Calif. coast in 1865. The ship was discovered, then the participants entered into a court battle which recently concluded with Calif. receiving 20% of the treasure. Only 19 of the ship's 250 passengers survived, making it the worst maritime history in the State's history.

Of the 1,207 gold coins recovered, experts considered this coin the prize piece. It contained a "printing blunder and is one of only 36 known to exist." The demonination of the 1865 coin was not mentioned in the article which appeared in the San Diego Union Tribune on Sunday, May 30th (dateline Los Angeles--AP).
