One of the "byproducts" of such an immense and extensive search is the detection of wreckage related to sunken ships and other downed aircraft. During the search for pieces of the Challenger space shuttle off Cape Canaveral in 1986, shipwrecks were indeed discovered and a few savy treasure hunters obtained this information. I believe the same is true of the TWA flight 800 crash off Long Island a few years ago.
