The information I provided came from the Victorian State Library, Melbourne. It is fact.
It is also fact that a ship's master can alter his course as he sees fit. An example of this is Bligh on the Bounty where he changed from trying to sail against the prevailing winds to round Cape Horn to running with the wind to get to Tahiti and went across the Southern Ocean.
It is possible that upon entering the Tasman Sea, the skipper encountered a 'Southerly Buster', such as descimated the Sydney to Hobart yacht race a few years ago, and decided to run with the wind. Who knows?
The route through the Barrier Reef was the course for ships that would leave Melbourne/Sydney to go to Batavia or China for a return cargo of spices, tea etc.
The Pandora was a RN ship sent out to the Pacific to get the mutineers from the Bounty, which it did. It was taking them to Batavia when it hit the reef.(I worked with one of the divers who worked for Ben Cropp on it). The ship had survivors and the position of the sinking was known approximately. The wreck was located using a RAAF Orion plane on information supplied by Ben Cropp.
