The'Madagascar' may never have reached Brazil as Cape Horn has claimed untold numbers of ships.Yachties tell of dismasting and pitchpoling(head over turkey)repeatedly. Sailing the other way(east to west) was no picnic, either.David Lewis in 'Icebird' quotes Capt.Jones in 'The Cape Horn Breed' of 130 commercial sailing vessels leaving European ports for Western America in may.june and july of 1905 as having four wrecked and fifty-three still missing four to six months later.
