I found the following:
In 1863 a Union gunboat sank a Confederate blockade runner in 16' of water one-half mile offshore of Lazy Island at the mouth of the Steinhatchee River. The Confederate vessel carried $50,000 in gold coins which wash up on the beach during storms.
In 1864 a U.S. gunboat chased a Confederate ship up the Suwannee River. As the Confederate vessel rounded the second bend of the river, the crew rolled off kegs of gold coins to prevent their capture by the Union gunboat.
