South Padre Island Help

January 10, 2004 at 01:49:12

I just recently became interested in treasure hunting with the use of a metal detector. I live in the Rio Grande Valley so I have easy access to South Padre Island. Before I invest in a metal detector, I have several questions that I need help answering. First, can you use a metal detector anywhere on SPI? If I were to find an old gold coin, do I have any legal right to keep it? (I read somewhere that anything you find on Texas land more than 50 years old belongs to the state. Is this true? If I can not keep it, then why bother looking for it? Has anyone done some treasure hunting along SPI? Any hot spots (if you are willing to share)? I have a truck but it is not 4WD. Will I have trouble making the journey to Mansfield cut along the coast side? I read that it is best to go when there is a low tide so that you can drive on the compact sand near the water. Any other info would be appreciated.
