Tom - I know that inlet pretty well. I know there is a sandbar just outside of the south jetty we called "Shark Shallow" that produces a breaking wave big enough to ride. It isn't called "Shark Shallow" for nothing though. Baitfish get forced through that area so be careful if your diving. If I were to look somewhere, that's where I'd go first as any ship that turned too early would surely run aground there. Although, whether or not the sandbar existed before the construction of the jetty, I'm not positive but after looking at a map of the inlet from the 1800's I have a good idea it was. Also, they've dredged that inlet a few times in the last 20/30 years - try looking for artifacts on the INSIDE of the south jetty (New Smyrna Bch.) That area would most likely catch a lot of whatever was pushed through. I am interested in that area as well. I know of a few other interesting sites. Email me if you'd like to exchange info.
